This is a great website no matter what age you are! The website gives a clear understanding of all six food groups just like the textbook. It also gives an opportunity to enter age, sex, and weight to determine exactly the intake an individual should be consuming. There is a great section for professionals on how to motivate kids on how to be healthy. A teacher could definitely use this website in a school setting.

How to select whole-grain foods packed with fiber and vitamins, plus easy ways to fit more whole grains into your diet. You can learn all about the different food groups and calorie and portion sizes you and your family need each day. And you can discover the different types of protein foods included in the meats and beans group and find out how much you need daily from this group depending on your age, sex, and physical activity.

  7. I want to share The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute’s website on asthma (http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/dci/Diseases/Asthma/Asthma_WhatIs.html). It relates to information found in chapter 5 about asthma. The site is operated by the government (I think this makes it more reputable). My husband was diagnosed with asthma. The information on this website helps me to better understand his condition. I would describe the site as a reference source. It is a storehouse of information. It seems like the site caters to people who are not in the medical profession. So teachers, parents, and those suffering from asthma will find the information easy to understand and the site effortless to navigate. The website starts out with and overview (description) of asthma. It provides a detailed diagram of the chest, lungs, and airways which enhance the reading. It continues to describe the sign and symptoms of asthma, the treatment, and those who are most at risk of developing asthma. I would refer anyone who needs more information about asthma to this site.

I liked this website because it explains what basic metabolic rate is. It also has a calculator in which you can plug in your weight, height, etc and calculate your basic metabolic rate. It can give you the number of calories you burn when inactive. This could be a useful tool in helping children understand the correlation between weight and health.

The American Academy of Pediatrics offers a very informative website that has a plethora of useful information. There is an area specifically designed for parents, professional education, and advocacy. Some interesting topics that are explored here are ages and stages, the affect that media has on children’s health, and how to understand your child’s temperament. I liked how this website did not just offer information on young children but it went all the way up through teens and young adults. The articles really offer positive solutions for issues such as using positive reinforcements and how children fare when both parents work. I recommend this website because the information is very crucial for caregivers and teachers.

It also serves as the Regional Office for the Americas of the World Health Organization and is part of the United Nations system. Their site covers topics like anthrax, health policy, rubella, whooping cough. And everything else one could possible think of as communicable disease related. Their site is also published in Spanish as they are a PAN American service. Their big push right now in disease prevention outreach is Tuberculosis awareness: “World TB Day is celebrated every 24 March. The slogan for 2010, ‘On the move against tuberculosis: Innovate to accelerate action,’ reflects the need to scale up efforts and continue to seek new and innovative ways to stop this disease. World TB Day serves to build public awareness that tuberculosis today remains an epidemic in much of the world.”

    Chapter 19 Fruit Drinks
According to the AAP, drinking too much juice can contribute to obesity, the development of cavitites, diarrhea, and other gastrointestinal problems, such as excessive gas, bloating and abdominal pain. When you give your child juice, it should be 100% pasteurized fruit juice and not fruit drinks. It's said that children under six months should not even be given juice. Instead of juice it's recommended that you give your child whole fruit. the main reason why it is important to not let your child drink too much juice is that it is filling and will decrease your child's appetite for other more nutritious foods. Juices do not have very much vitamins and nutrients.

    Chapter 5
Topic Covered: Why chronic disease is difficult to identify in young children.
This website discusses some of the causes of chronic disease in young children, such as the exposure to things that contain lead like paint. With the exposure to lead it is important to get the child to their health care provider as soon as possible so the long term affects of lead poisoning are not able to set in. this website also talks about the most common types of chronic disease found in children which include: asthma, diabetes, and various forms of cancer. As a future educator it is important to know a background about these chronic diseases, and know what you can do for students in the classroom that are experiencing them. In addition to discussing why these diseases are difficult to identify in young children, this website also addresses how you can talk to people and let them know what your child is going through. It gives suggestions on how to let the teacher, and students know about the potentially life threatening disease that the child is going through. This website explains that it is important to remember that these children that are dealing with these chronic diseases are going through a hard time and it is important to keep their interests in mind when teaching, and planning lessons. Make sure that anything that you plan will not trigger their symptoms.

    chapter 10
    CPR
In children cardiac arrest is caused by an injury such as poisoning, smoke inhalation, or head trauma, which causes the breathing to stop first. If the child is unresponsive and you are alone with him, start rescue efforts immediately and perform CPR for at least 1 to 2 minutes before dialing 9-1-1. Before you call an ambulance, check the child for responsiveness by gently taping the child and shouting, "Are you okay?" the website says If the child is clearly unconscious, remember your A-B-C and check the child's airway. Look, listen and feel for any signs of breathing. If the child remains unconcious pinch his nose with your fingertips or cover his mouth and nose with your mouth creating a tight seal, and give two breaths When giving air to a child, be sure to use shallower breaths and keep an eye on the child’s chest to prevent stomach distention. Place two fingertips and applying slight pressure on his carotid artery for 5 to 10 seconds. If don't feel a pulse then the victim's heart is not beating, and you will have to perform chest compressions. I am CPR certified and plan to remain that way in case of an emergency.

    Additives
These days, many of the foods being consumed are made of chemical additives. Although many people do not even know the name of these chemical additives, they want to know about possible health threats and dangers. One way to take caution with additives is to avoid sodium nitrite, saccharin, caffeine, olestra, and artificial coloring. These things are not only a possible health threat but also foods with these things typically have low nutritional value. The two most familiar additives are sugar and salt and because we take in the most of them, they could pose the greatest risk. Although there are many harmful additives, many additives are safe and some add nutritional value to foods.
